J. C. Penney Company, Inc. NYSE: JCP (most commonly known today by the name JCPenney) is a department store chain. The chain is a subsidiary of the J C Penney Corporation.
JCPenney runs more than 1,000 department stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. The mother store is located in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
The company employs about 151,000 people (as of 2005). The current CEO is Myron E. Ullman III.

History
The chain was founded in 1902 by w:James Cash Penney, commonly known as J.C. Penney.
The original name for the store was the "Golden Rule Store", but was changed to J. C. Penney in 1912.
In 2002 the J C Penney Company was created as a holding company for department store operator J C Penney Corporation.
