Alcatel SA is a French company that makes telecommunications transmission equipment, including multiplexers and fiber optic terminal equipment and integrated circuits.
The business is most notably known for its GSM telephones and its ADSL modems, but also for its submarine transmission cables, and transport automation services.
Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries. The current CEO (2004) is Serge Tchuruk.
There are two stocks named "Alcatel" on the Paris stock exchange: the share Alcatel was part of the CAC 40, the share Alcatel O concerns the entity Alcatel Optronics.
The name "Alcatel" comes from a small telephone company, "Alsace Cable and Telephony".
