In the late 1940s a wealthy family named Black purchased a parcel of land from the well-known Scripps family in the coastal village near San Diego. The Blacks turned the nearly ten acres into an equestrian estate and training ground for young thoroughbreds. Today, Estancia La Jolla resides on the same historic Black family horse farm. On June 28, 2004, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa officially opened to guests. By May of 2005, the hotel had already achieved the status of being one of the “Hottest New Hotels of the World” by Condé Nast Traveler as well as earning the coveted “Four-Diamond” rating awarded by AAA, among others.
Designed by Hill Glazer Architects, the property’s architecture was carefully constructed to pay homage to the rich history of the property and the surrounding area. There are a series of three low-rise adobe buildings with arched doorways and clay tile roofs incorporated into the hotel that were actually modeled after, and utilize material from, the original equestrian estate. The business center is modeled after the caretaker's cottage, the hotel lobby was created from the old farmhouse, and the Mustangs & Burros bar was inspired by the tack room. With the help of the La Jolla Historical Society, the original buildings were deconstructed, but the bricks were preserved.
