Cineplex Galaxy LP

Toronto based Cineplex Galaxy LP was created in May 1998 after the merger of New York NY-based Loews Theatres (founded in 1904 by Marcus Loew) to form Loews Cineplex Entertainment. Within a few years, Onex sold the U.S. unit, keeping the Canadian operations and forming Cineplex Galaxy LP.

On June 13, 2005, Cineplex Galaxy announced its acquisition of Famous Players from Viacom for CAD 500 million or about USD 397 million.

On June 21, 2005, New York NY-based Loews Cineplex Entertainment was sold by consortium of Bain Capital, The Carlyle Group and Spectrum Equity Investors to Kansas MO-based AMC Entertainment Incorporated (founded 1920. The new company will be named AMC Entertainment Incorporated. AMC Entertainment Incorporated also operates in Canada, ranked 3rd behind Cineplex Odeon Corporation.

Despite the U.S. transaction, Cineplex Galaxy LP and AMC Entertainment will continue to operate separately in Canada.
