History

Bewley's operated a chain of coffee houses (some company owned, some franchised), Bewley's Oriental Cafes, until 2004. Most of the operations in the chain had been sold or closed by the late 1990s however.

On 29 October, 2004, the Campbell Bewley Group announced the closure of its remaining Dublin city premises, the flagship Grafton Street cafe (opened 1927) and the Westmorland Street cafe. The original Bewley's, in North Great George's Street, had been closed some years previously and converted into a successful bar and restaurant, Cafe Bar-Deli. The only remaining operation is a concession in the Dawson Street branch of Waterstones.

In early December 2004, rumors [1] began to circulate in the national media (notably first in the Irish Independent) that the Insomnia Coffee House chain (the largest chain of coffee shops in Ireland) is considering buying the two closed coffee shops.

On 2005-04-26, Campbell Bewley Group announced that they would be re-opening the Grafton Street cafe, in a new format. It will be managed by the owners of Cafe Bar-Deli. It is expected to reopen in May 2005.
